divine purpose

According to Jeffress who is a major pro-Trump pastoral voice, Trump “came to the conclusion—the right conclusion—that God has a purpose for him”(Peter Baker, NYT, 16.). This is another version of the manifest destiny imparted to the USA by a white divinity justified in its bouts of anger and rage. While opting for this kind of ideology, Trump, family, and friends are profiting significantly from the presidency. Wealth in this context is tantamount to a blessing. No difference is made between the importance of the rule of law, the defense of the national interests and the graft thought to be a natural reward for divine genius. The markets have been tanking but Trump and his friends can pretend to be on the side of main street and be believed by their followers while lining their own pockets. The difference with Roosevelt in the 30s is that Roosevelt proposed 76 bills in 100 days. With Trump, on the contrary, all decisions are made by executive order: only five laws have been passed but 142 executive orders have been signed. The most dangerous period starts now when judges and legal representatives themselves may be threatened even physically. It will be most revealing to see what kind of decisions the Supreme Court soon takes. This phase is most dangerous and needs to be opposed as Trump will be tempted to bypass the will of the people whose majority he never got and whose support he is losing rapidly.
